Temporary Earthly Life Concerns

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (Romans 8:18)

Suffering in the present time.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer person is decaying, yet our inner person is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

Seeing at temporal things.

1 For we know that if our earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For indeed, in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, 3 since in fact after putting it on, we will not be found naked. 4 For indeed, we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life. (2 Corinthians 5:1-4)

Focusing on our heavenly house while enduring earthly suffering.

Aren’t our lives, marriages, children, houses, cars… temporary possessions on this earth anyway?

Aren’t we pilgrims on this earth anyway?

6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight— 8 but we are of good courage and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:6-8)

Preferring to be absent from the body.

20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our lowly condition into conformity with His glorious body, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself. (Philippians 3:20-21)

Being a citizen of heaven.

13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen and welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. (Hebrews 11:13)

Being as strangers and exiles on earth.

16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them. (Hebrews 11:16)

Desiring a better country.

14 For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come. (Hebrews 13:14)

Seeking the everlasting city.

11 Beloved, I urge you as foreigners and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts, which wage war against the soul. (1 Peter 2:11)

Being as foreigners and strangers on earth.

17 The world is passing away and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God continues to live forever. (1 John 2:17)

Living in a world passing away.
